Close to a highway and river, Old Monroe was once the site of lumber interests in the area—and some lumber companies still exist in the area today. The town itself is a small, out-of-the-way place perfect for someone wanting a break from the more urban areas further south.

Old Monroe is a picturesque small town, with lots of open area for development. Smaller ranch style houses are common, but newer construction has brought housing of all styles and sizes to the town. Housing tends to be inexpensive, spacious, and with plenty of “green space.”

Old Monroe was the original site of Fort Howard, built during the war of 1812. It was laid out as a community in 1819 and named for President James Monroe.

Old Monroe is nestled along scenic highway 79 and the Cuivre river.

Old Monroe is served by the Winfield R-IV School District.
